Increased position on Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust

From mid September , the situation in Hongkong have taken a turn for the worse & violence had reached culmination point.

Innocent civilians get assaulted, Secondary school students skips school & take part in protests, families broken up because of different political views, Public transport infrastructure, business & banks properties have been vandalized by rioters which  take a heavy toil on HongKong already fragile economy.

It seems that social media wielded a great influence on how people thinks & feels. Especially in Hongkong, a lot of people had great misconception on its HK Police force & China government due to fake news circulated online. And apparently HK government is losing out the war in social media as they fail to extinguish the seeds of hatred from fake news. Fortunately for Singapore, our government had introduced the fake news law which had come into effect on Oct this year.

The only silver lining is China President Xi's vows to maintain the stability of Hongkong which prompted me to add on MNACT which I bought 10,000 shares of Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust at $1.27 per share.

I view this protests as short term whipsaws & will eventually calm down when the dust have been settled.

Any further provocation by the rioters will be met with the declaration of emergency laws which the SAR Hongkong government can introduce curfew or request assistance from China though I don't wish to see it happens but it is the worst scenario I have to be mentally prepared.

The upcoming MNACT quarterly result is on 25 Oct & from there we can deduce how the protest affects its Festival Walk property in Hongkong which contribute abt 64% of of its total income.

  1. I cleared all mnact instead. The protest could be short but it will take min 2 yrs for tourist to return, esp mainland. Now anything related to hk is viewed negative from most Chinese, esp mainland.

    1. Clearing it was an option too, stay sidelines to observe. I concerned the long term effects it will have on Festival Walk if the protest continue with escalating violence as it will affect HK economy & particularly its tourism . Festival Walk is a favorite place for tourists to visit.
The short term effects is not worrying because its tenants are bonded to the contract till the leases have expired.

  3. I am really perplexed and shocked by what you said about the situation in HK and fake news. Fortunately, the vast majority of Hong Kongers are smarter than you are.
